How I Became an Ah-Rah

I have always dreamed of the day I would meet my first grand child. Visions of ‘spoiling the little one rotten while their mother rolled her eyes’ has always brought a smile to my face. And as it turns out, the reality was no different. On June 16, 2007 my first grand baby was born. She was named Kalila Lorlei (Kali for short) and she was perfect from the start. Dark hair, bright eyes, and a love of snuggling that melted me instantly. I barely wanted to put her down.

I decided she would choose my “grandmotherly name” and waited with anticipation as she began to babble in her own little world. What would she call me? Nana? Grandma? Me Maw? I struggled with the idea that she might choose Grandma and whether I would like it. After all, I am too young to be called Grandma!

As Kali would have it a ‘normal’ grandmotherly name would not do, thus, I became Ah-Rah. From the time she was about 6 months old she has consistently referred to me as Ah-Rah and I love the name. I have been asked several times why I allow her to call me that and the answer is always, “I am her Grandmother, she can call me anything she likes.” After all, how can you say no to this face?

She is now about to turn 4 and I have no idea where the time has gone. As I search for birthday presents online I wonder what fun and adventure her next four years will hold and quickly decide that whatever it is, Ah-Rah will be right there waiting in the wings to hear all about it. 🙂
